Goats

The goat industry has a vision of "more goats on farms"

There is a growing national and international demand for goat meat and fibre. One of the problems in the New Zealand goat meat market is continual supply. By having more goats on more farms there is greater opportunity to provide a more consistent supply as numbers of goats increase.

Scientific reports indicate that goats are very complimentary to other farming systems and enterprises, in improving the pasture quality for all classes of livestock.

Goats are very effective for weed control, especially as we move to a greater awareness of the overuse of chemicals.


Goat Advisory Group

Meat & Wool New Zealand's Goat Advisory Group includes a mixture of goat farmers and industry representatives. The group advises Meat & Wool New Zealand on goat industry issues, has an overview of animal health, welfare, disease and environmental issues affecting goats, advises on appropriate areas for investment of the goatmeat levy, and facilitates two-way communication between Meat & Wool New Zealand and goat farmers. Annual Goat Review
Meat & Wool New Zealand's Economic Service produces an annual goat review that provides information on goat numbers, meat production, exports and imports, and physical and financial data on goats on sheep and beef farms. Read the latest Goat Review.

National Goat Monitoring Project

Meat & Wool New Zealand invested farmer levies in the National Goat Monitoring project, which began in July 2004 and ended in June 2007. The project aimed to get pastoral farmers to integrate goats onto existing farms. It was co-funded by the MAF Sustainable Farming Fund, Mohair New Zealand and the New Zealand Boer Goat Breeders Association. A number of information sheets and reports were produced:
